Increased Use, Overcrowding Cited

Almost everyone in Rio Rancho uses the public library, and even the majority of those who have at-home access to the World Wide Web still want to use books and computers at the library, a survey said.

Because of that popularity and growth of the city, the library is overburdened and librarians are hoping to expand the library on Pinetree Road within a few years.

The library now is so overcrowded that staff members have to store some volumes in a bathroom, have moved offices into former study areas, have stacked shelves on shelves and have crowded computer terminals into the reference area, said library director Toni Beatty.

"One of the things as you walk in that assaults you is all the stuff. It's not the quiet contemplative atmosphere of a library," Beatty said recently.

Last fall, the library commissioned a study, which asked 500 residents, or about 1 percent of the population, how much they used the library and what they wanted from it. …
