Tijeras Council Deems Old Log Cabin a Hazard.

The 1930s log cabin north of old Route 66 in Tijeras is a safety hazard and will be torn down, the Tijeras Village Council decided Monday.

The cabin and the 1.76-acre property surrounding it are located behind the Canyon Kids Club and are visible from Interstate 40.

The council voted 4-1 in favor of having the cabin torn down because children have been playing inside the building. Councilor George Nuanez cast the dissenting vote.

Nuanez said he is against tearing the cabin down and would rather see it restored because it is one of the only old buildings that remain in the village.

"The reason I was asking for restoration of the building is because it's a historic site and we only have one other historic site, which is the church," Nuanez said during Monday's meeting, referring to the Santo Nino church, an adobe structure west of the East Mountain Library. …
