Ills Put Ranchers On Alert Foot-Mouth Disease Prevention Stressed.

Recent pictures of European livestock being destroyed because of foot-and-mouth disease have raised awareness among New Mexico officials working to protect the state's livestock from the deadly disease.

Although there is concern about foot-and-mouth spreading to this country, the state is doing everything it can to ensure its $2 billion livestock industry isn't affected by Europe's problem, said Steve England, New Mexico's state veterinarian.

The foot-and-mouth virus is spread easily through the air and causes blister-like sores on the hooves and mouths of livestock. The disease can kill young animals and limit the growth of older ones. …
