Lawmakers' Measures Await Gov. Signature

The state Legislature passed several bills in its recent session that could benefit residents of the East Mountains and Estancia Valley. Whether they will be signed into law by the governor remains to be seen.

During the 60-day session that ended Saturday, lawmakers approved legislation that could increase state oversight of private prisons like the one in Estancia, and allow New Mexico State Police to contract with small towns like Edgewood for police services.

In addition, an appropriation bill that would have provided $500,000 for completion and implementation of regional water plans passed both houses, but no money is available to fund the legislation. …
