Experts Find No Easy Answer Against Encroaching Arroyo.

Firefighters at the Rio Grande Estates Fire Station are growing uneasy about an arroyo that inches closer to the station house with every rainfall.

But no one among the several governmental agencies that might be involved has come up with an easy answer to correct the problem.

The erosion began in the mid-1980s after the state highway department installed a culvert under N.M. 47 to drain water from the east mesa into an open area west of the highway, just south of the fire station. The arroyo, which reaches a depth of 15 to 20 feet, is now within 100 feet of the station.

"Every time it rains, the arroyo grows a little bit," Fire Chief Vince Giangrossi said Wednesday. …
