Albuquerque High isn't daunted by anew state tournament format

"You can never count out a 'Dog, never," says Albuquerque High boys tennis coach Ray Baca Jr.

Embodying their coach's one-for-all and all-for-one, total-team outlook, the Bulldogs in a wise tactical maneuver concentrated their best players in doubles to win the 2000 Class 4A boys team tennis championship.

In the end, it didn't really matter which doubles team won the finals match last May. In a 1-2 finish, AHS's Eric Conklin and Andrew Goodkind beat their Bulldogs brethren, Clayton Cheney and the now-graduated Jacob Hartz, 6-4, 6-4 for the state doubles title.

But the important thing to Baca and his boys was that AHS' double-double domination on the far right side of the bracket clinched the team crown. …
