Drug That Treats Overdoses Is In Short Supply.(Metropolitan)

A shortage of a drug used by paramedics to treat heroin overdoses had Albuquerque Ambulance Service scrambling to restock its supply and has other emergency service providers planning for potential deficiencies, providers say.

The drug, which goes by the brand name Narcan, is a narcotic antagonist that helps resuscitate people who have overdosed on heroin or any other morphine-based drug, said Mike Jambrosic, executive director of Albuquerque Ambulance.

Jambrosic said last week he contacted Presbyterian Hospital pharmacy, the ambulance service's medication supplier, only to learn that the pharmacy couldn't fill the order. …
