Softball Team Gets Loss and Tie Vs. Utes.(Sports)

It was a long day on the softball field for New Mexico, which opened Mountain West Conference play in disappointing fashion Friday against Utah.

UNM (27-14-1, 0-1-1 in league play) let a late lead slip away in the opener of a doubleheader at Lobo Field, losing 14-5. UNM rallied to force a 5-5 tie in a second game that was called because of darkness after nine innings.

The Utes (19-15-1, 1-0-1) scored 13 runs in the final two innings in the opener, erasing a 3-1 Lobos lead. Amy Dumas, a freshman from Farmington who was the conference pitcher of the week, gave up nine hits in 5-plus innings but only two earned runs. …
