In the life of a New Mexico sled dog, there are just two seasons that count: cold and hot. Summer is to be tolerated. Winter, however, is what these working dogs live for.

The nippy mornings of October are a wake-up call for the four Alaskan huskies owned by Steve and Schelley Carlton of Albuquerque. After the long, hot summer, the arrival of fall signals the start of training and the promise of racing.

"These dogs just live to run," says Carlton. "And as for me, I love to see dogs with a purpose in their lives."

Ellie, Simon, Lainey and Bonnie, all mixed-breed Alaskan huskies, are definitely family pets, but with a twist they're the stars in a family whose recreational outings often entail driving 900 miles on a winter weekend to dog sled races throughout the Rocky Mountain region. …
