* Energy experts meeting in Santa Fe see no fast cure

SANTA FE California's power woes, with rolling blackouts and soaring prices, should get a lot worse before they get better.

That was the universal message from utility and regulatory experts gathered for a three-day conference in Santa Fe this week on issues challenging the utility industry.

The conference was sponsored by New Mexico State University's Center for Public Utilities.

"Be careful, it can happen in your area," said Anjali Sheffrin, director of market analysis for the California Independent System Operator.

A continued shortage of power until new plants are operational will mean two rough summers ahead in California, said John Jurewitz, manager of regulatory policy at Southern California Edison. …
