Pending Vetoes To Set Johnson's Tax Legacy.(Editorial Page)


Half a loaf is better than none. Don't rob Peter to pay Paul. Those hoary aphorisms could be good advice for Gov. Gary Johnson as he contemplates making good on a couple of high-profile veto threats.

The first could guide him in deciding whether to sign the $27 million income tax cut plus one-time rebate the Legislature sent up in lieu of Johnson's preferred $72 million permanent income tax cut.

Let's be clear. Legislative Democrats should have done better on tax cuts, giving permanent relief to the people who pay income taxes. It's shameful they couldn't do better when operating with a backdrop of huge surpluses and an 11.5 percent spending increase. …
