Church Appeals Building Permit Denial.

A Russian Orthodox Church in Santa Fe hoping to build a new church west of the city is appealing a county decision that the church is not a good fit for the proposed location.

Last month, the county Extraterritorial Zoning Authority slapped down an application from St. Juliana of Lazerevo Russian Orthodox Church to build a new church near West Alameda Street and Chicoma Vista. The church's current building is on West Alameda Street. An appeal of the board's Feb. 27 decision was filed Friday in state district court.

St. Juliana is applying to build a 65-foot-high church and a cemetery. Santa Fe attorney Ralph Scheuer, who represents the church, said the congregation has 30 families. …
