* Downtown protest part of nationwide effort

Some of the decade's hippest protest targets fair trade, genetically modified foods and Starbucks flared in a modest sidewalk protest in Santa Fe on Tuesday afternoon.

A handful of activists, representing a hodgepodge of local and national groups, picketed the Starbucks coffee shop at 106 San Francisco St. downtown. The group carried signs decrying the working conditions and wages at coffee plantations and criticizing Starbucks' use of milk that contains rBGH, a growth hormone that makes cows produce more milk. They also passed out leaflets to passersby listing the company's alleged problems and featuring Starbuck's familiar green-and-white logo altered with the slogan "Frankenbucks Coffee. …
