Governor Calls In-Plant Funds 'a Boondoggle'

The state's business groups walked away from the just-concluded New Mexico Legislature feeling they had to play too much defense to score well in the Roundhouse.

The frustration came even though Gov. Gary Johnson was among their top cheerleaders.

But at a legislative review luncheon on Tuesday, Johnson told the host group, the Association of Commerce and Industry, that it wasn't going to get all it wanted in education reform and in-plant training.

Johnson, the keynote speaker at the event, acknowledged the hard work of the organization.

But the governor said the current state Board of Education is "doing what it's supposed to do," even though ACI and other business groups lobbied hard for a deep overhaul of the board. …
