State penitentiary officials say they are keeping convicted con man Steven Byers securely behind bars while he serves year seven of a 25 1/2-year prison term.

He was sentenced in April 1993 after twice escaping from the Sandoval County Detention Center.

During his second escape, he fled to Nevada. He was caught several months later, in November 1992, in a casino in Sparks, Nev. Customers helped police arrest him after he fell on their table during a struggle with officers.

He was brought back to Albuquerque to face prison time for prior convictions. Byers had pleaded guilty in Bernalillo County to fraud and forgery and was sentenced to 22 years in prison, but six of those years were suspended. …
