Gov. Says Feds May Shut Down 2 Casinos.

Gov. Gary Johnson said Tuesday the federal government will shut down casinos operated by the Pojoaque Pueblo and the Mescalero Apaches if they do not agree to a new state-tribal gambling compact.

"If Pojoaque and Mescalero don't get on board, they will get shut down, in my opinion," the governor said in a speech to the Association of Commerce and Industry in Albuquerque.

Federal officials declined comment, saying the issue has not yet reached Washington.

Tribal leaders for Pojoaque and Mescalero, who endorsed George W. Bush for president last year, vowed to continue operating their casinos under their 1997 compacts, which were scheduled to expire in 2006. …
