In 34 years, Conoco store owner has adapted as community has grown, changed

In the years Frank Chavez has been selling hay and pumping gas at his store on Camino del Pueblo, Bernalillo has become a crossroads between two of the metro area's fastest growing communities.

Orchards and alfalfa fields have given way to homes, and N.M. 44, renamed U.S. 550, is crowded with traffic from Rio Rancho and Placitas.

"(Bernalillo) has changed drastically," he said as customers came in and out of the store. "I would say the population has grown three times since I started the business."

Chavez opened Bernalillo Feed and Conoco Service on March 5, 1967. …
