Field Events Fuel Bears Run

Tradition is nice and all. But how about giving the other guys a chance every once in a while?

La Cueva, under new coach Mike Tixier, won its 10th straight title at the 39th annual F.M. Wilson Relays boys high school track-and-field meet at Wilson Stadium on Monday.

"I think (the 1,600-meter medley relay) sealed it for us," said Tixier. "But the field events are what put us over."

The Bears ran past runner-up Highland 114-66. Los Alamos was third with 53 points, and Eldorado, with 52 1/2, finished fourth.

"It's hard not running for the Henrys," La Cueva senior Kevin Hill said of departed Bears coaches Matt and Mark, who are now at the University of New Mexico. …
