Santa Fe Symphony's latest concert leaves room for improvement.(Entertainment)

The Santa Fe Symphony has come a distance in its 17 seasons. It still has a distance to go, as Sunday evening's concert in the Sweeney Center revealed.

The capabilities of guest conductor Mitchell Arnold notwithstanding, the orchestra still came across as an inconsistent instrument. Disciplined passages expressively played sat side by side with uneven attacks and careless phrasing. The fact that some things could be done well made the less well-rendered even more discomforting to the ear.

And the fact that this state of affairs persists no matter who is conducting points to the challenge of correcting the situation. …
