Big I Rubble Makes a U-Turn.(Metro & New Mexico)

* Almost all of the interstate's roadway will be recycled for subsurface, saving materials and truck trips

A huge recycling effort at the Big I project is providing material for road construction while reducing the need for truck trips to the site.

Virtually all the piles of rubble strewn about the site are being recycled.

Old roadway asphalt is being torn up and crushed to be used as a subsurface base for the new roadway.

When torn up, asphalt is left in 3-to-4-foot chunks. A portable crusher tears up those chunks into inch-sized gravel-like bits that are used for the roadway subsurface, said Gray Kite, construction manager with Twin Mountain Construction II Co. …
