City Needs State Help To Revive Baseball.(Editorial Page)


The city of Albuquerque is trying very hard to get Triple-A baseball back into New Mexico. The effort includes trying to get someone other than Albuquerque taxpayers to pay for at least part of a new or renovated stadium for a return of Triple-A baseball. Two bills from the recently concluded Legislature provide funding mechanisms.

One, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero, D-Albuquerque, would increase lodgers tax in Albuquerque by 1.25 percent, with half the proceeds going to finance the stadium and half going to promote tourism in the city. Gov. Gary Johnson has said he will veto the bill, citing his opposition to a tax increase without a vote of the people. …
