Eldorado Water Hookups on Hold

A moratorium on new hookups to the private water company that serves the Eldorado development southeast of Santa Fe was barely six months old when people started talking about lifting it.

That was almost five years ago, and the moratorium still is in effect.

Enacted in April 1996, it banned the development of any new projects that El Dorado Utilities Inc. might serve, and that didn't already have master-plan approval.

County Commissioner Javier Gonzales, who in 1999 complained that "this cannot go on forever," is once again calling for its end.

"A five-year moratorium is crazy," Gonzales said. "The moratorium is not the way to address the long-term water needs in Eldorado."

Gonzales last week asked county administrators to give him a time line and game plan for ending the moratorium. …
