Sunport Retail Plan Could Use More Work.(Editorial Page)

Over the last few months, city officials have been working on an alternate proposal to one that basically would have combined all non-food retail spaces at the Sunport into two big chunks.

Current airport vendors feared the original plan would have put most of them out of business. It probably would have, as most current vendors are fairly small enterprises.

City Councilor Mike McEntee suggested separate contracts for each of the 17 possible retail spaces planned for the Sunport, but city Aviation Director Jay Czar argued that his department is set up to run an airport, not a mall.

Now, the administration has proposed several changes in the plan, such as offering more, smaller groups of retail spaces; agreeing to build the small kiosks that would replace vendor carts; and placing a cap on the management fees that could be passed down to sublessees improving the possibility that a small vendor could continue to do business. …
