Sunport Retailer Blasts City Request.

A longtime retailer at the Albuquerque International Sunport is accusing the city of harassment for requiring him to comply with a previously unenforced clause in his vending contract.

George Cook, owner of Shop Southwest Gifts & News, was notified Thursday that he must provide the city's internal audit department with an annual report and accompanying documentation certifying that "at least 50 percent of all operational expenditures went to local suppliers, vendors and sub-lessees, partnerships or corporations."

Cook views the requirement which has never been enacted in the decade it has been in effect as retaliation for his outspoken criticism of the process the city is using to expand retail operations at the airport.

City officials, however, say the request for the annual report is merely one facet of a long-planned audit of the Aviation Department.
