Tax Exemption For Museums Right Idea.(Opinion)

Another Santa Fe problem the tax status of private, nonprofit museums also is a step closer to resolution as a result of this session's legislative action.

The bill, now on Gov. Gary Johnson's desk, would exempt such museums from property taxes as long as they provide educational programs and offer free admission to local students.

If Johnson signs the bill and we think he should the immediate beneficiary would be the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. For more than a year, the Santa Fe County assessor has been trying to collect $12,000 in property taxes from the privately owned institution.
