Law Averts Crisis At St. Vincent.(Opinion)

One of Santa Fe's thornier problems has been at least partly resolved, thanks to a new law signed by Gov. Gary Johnson on Wednesday.

The measure protects St. Vincent Hospital's access to federal health-care funding even if a privately owned hospital opens here as planned.

Such protection is vital. St. Vincent treats Santa Fe's poor and uninsured, and federal money and the county indigent fund help cover the cost of that care. Without this reimbursement, currently more than $13 million, the hospital might not be able to stay open.

The new law also will help community hospitals in Las Cruces, Lovington and Clovis, where other privately run hospitals also are in the works. …
