Veto of State Fund Measure Expected

Gov. Gary Johnson's promise Saturday to veto a statewide capital appropriations bill raises new hurdles for the effort to build an annex at the Palace of the Governors, the state history museum and 391-year-old emblem of New Mexico's colonial past.

About $9 million of the state-wide construction and equipment bill was earmarked for improvements to the Palace on Santa Fe's Plaza, a project that would create exhibition space and rescue centuries-old antiques and artwork from a leaky basement.

After the close of the 2001 legislative session at noon Saturday, Johnson pledged to veto the bill because income tax cuts approved by the Legislature were not extensive enough. …
