Mud puddles may be a common sight in the East Mountains right now, but when the puddles become dry cracks and the winds begin to blow, local fire agencies want to be ready.

The Sandia and Mountainair ranger districts are gearing up for fire season in the Cibola National Forest.

"Everyone sees the rain and snow, but fire season could be 30 days away," Sandia District Ranger Cliff Dils said at a fire workshop in Albuquerque last week. …
