The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra conductor race is moving toward the home stretch.

Friday evening in Popejoy Hall, Barbara Yahr, a New Yorker by birth and the seventh of ten candidates, supplied a few qualities that have been missing. Eschewing the flash and dash of some previous candidates, she offered music making that stuck to the ribs.

A petite figure in whose hands the extra long conductor's stick looked out of proportion, Yahr came briskly onstage, all business in her neatly tailored black pant suit. A handshake to concertmaster Krzysztof Zimowski, a brief bow to the audience, and then she was on the podium, ready to go to work. …
