Albuquerque pianist Fred Sturm will play music of Scott Joplin of the United States, Ernesto Lecuona of Cuba and Ernesto Nazareth of Brazil in a concert Friday.

"These pieces fit together stylistically. They're very similar but there's enough variety to make a good program," Sturm said.

"Historically, you can look at it as showing a kind of cultural continuum that went up the Atlantic coast of South America through the Caribbean and up the Mississippi River."

Joplin, a native of St. Louis, Mo., is considered a genius of ragtime compositions. Sturm will play his "Elite Syncopations" and "Maple Leaf Rag. …
