Gov. Intends To Veto Lodgers Tax Increase

SANTA FE Gov. Gary Johnson said Saturday that he will veto a proposal to increase lodgers tax in Albuquerque to finance a Triple-A baseball stadium.

However, the governor suggested he was more inclined to support a second measure that calls for using a state loan to renovate the old Sports Stadium or build a new ballpark and pay back the loan through a stadium surcharge.

The lodgers tax bill, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero, D-Albuquerque, would increase the city lodgers tax from 5 percent to 6.25 percent. Half of the new revenue would go toward financing the stadium and the other half to promote tourism in the city. …
