The missing element in the firestorm that erupted in state Republican Party politics between Sen. Pete Domenici and John Dendahl is whom Domenici would like to see in Dendahl's place.

The GOP state chairman's support of drug reform legislation put him at odds with New Mexico's senior senator and most prominent Republican.

Domenici was infuriated when Dendahl appeared at a Capitol news conference with former Democratic Gov. Toney Anaya to urge passage of the drug reform bills sought by Republican Gov. Gary Johnson.

Domenici said Dendahl had crossed a line and should resign as Republican Party chief, a post he has held since December 1994. …
