Luring Companies Corporation's Task

The newly formed Economic Development Corp. has an aggressive schedule to meet in recruiting companies to the state -- its mandate under its $1.4 million contract.

Under its one-year contract with the state, the corporation has to bring at least seven companies to the state that will create 700 new jobs. Forty percent of the jobs must be in rural communities.

Rural communities are in a "drought" when it comes to economic activity, economic development secretary Rick Homans told the corporation's board at its first meeting on Wednesday.

"Many of these communities are hanging by a thread," he said. …
