Results of a preliminary investigation of the Independence Day escape from the McKinley County Adult Detention Center are nothing short of astounding. Some of the findings about what went wrong that day at the jail operated by Management & Training Corp.:

* Only one guard was watching about 80 prisoners because of holiday scheduling. A second guard ordinarily would have been on duty.

* The short staffing led to a missed head count, which gave the escapees a three-hour head start.

* The four escapees were among about 15 other prisoners who were unsupervised in the recreation area for about an hour.

* Poorly positioned security cameras did not cover the area where inmates escaped. …
