La Nina May Not Arrive.(Final)

The Pacific Ocean appears to have pulled a fast one, leading forecasters Thursday to back away from a forecast made two months ago that La Nina is coming.

La Nina, a pattern marked by cool water along the Pacific, is linked to dry winters in New Mexico.

But the ominous May forecast that La Nina was looming may have been premature, according to new information made public Thursday by the federal government's Climate Prediction Center in Maryland.

La Nina now appears to be developing slowly and may not make an appearance at all, said Wayne Higgins, one of the researchers at the Climate Prediction Center who worked on the latest monthly forecast. …
