* Opponents say Medicare measures in Congress could hurt elderly cancer patients

Terry Sleight got chemotherapy for her colon cancer Thursday morning, but that didn't stop her from showing up at a news conference to protest proposed cuts in payments for those drugs.

"This is age discrimination," the 78-year-old Albuquerque woman said of legislation pending in Congress. "It essentially denies (Medicare patients) good treatment."

Sleight joined other local advocates and cancer doctors to warn that such cuts could harm older people with cancer.

Dr. Barbara McAneny, managing partner of the New Mexico Cancer Center, said the cuts would probably force her group to stop offering chemotherapy to any new Medicare patients. …
