All-Star Game Is Last Chance

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- Injuries are part of the game in football.

But for former Raton High School football player Cisco Samora, his was one that nearly prevented him from taking part in Saturday's Class 3A North-South All-Star game at New Mexico Highlands University.

A standout three-sport athlete for the Tigers, the 5-foot-6, 173-pounder said it was the muffled sound of breaking bones he will remember most about his senior year.

In the midst of his final season in a Tigers uniform, his life -- and his athletic career -- took a dramatic turn for the worse in a non-district outing at Tucumcari last September.

"It was sick. I knew right away it was bad," Samora said. "It was painful, but the hardest thing might have been the recovery because I missed school for a month, and I was in rehab for another two. …
