To Tom Widmer and Joe Shonka, autopsy reports, soil samples and data on historic radionuclide releases are a treasure trove of information on past public exposure to nuclear and toxic materials from Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Since 1998, their team of researchers has been sifting through thousands of documents -- many of them classified -- that are locked away at LANL. Their goal is to determine what the public's exposure has been to carcinogenic and life-shortening materials since 1943.

The researchers are working for the National Center for Environmental Health -- a division of the federal Centers for Disease Control -- on the Los Alamos Historical Document Retrieval and Assessment Project. …
