Dry Conditions Being Blamed

Complaints about black bears have skyrocketed in northeastern New Mexico in the past few days, said the region's top Game and Fish Department official.

In a pattern similar to the summer of bear invasions two years ago, drying forests -- with slim natural pickings -- have sent a host of the large, hungry animals toward humans, said Bill Hays, chief of the department's northeastern New Mexico region.

He's had six to 10 calls about "bear complaints" -- sightings or trash raids near homes and other human habitats -- in the past few days. Bear calls started coming in about 10 days ago, he said. …
