J. Leon Thompson was dedicated to children -- his own, those who attended Albuquerque schools and those in Shriners Hospitals.

Thompson was a longtime Board of Education member who helped establish Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute. He also served Albuquerque by volunteering on more than 16 boards.

He died of a heart attack on July 1 at his Albuquerque home. Thompson was 91.

Thompson was described as a dedicated, friendly person by his friend since high school, H.L. "Hickum" Galles Jr.

"He was one of the real leaders in the school system when John Milne was superintendent," Galles said. …
