Outrage over the shooting death of toddler while she played in her family's apartment two summers ago fueled an intense probe that netted three suspects near the U.S.-Canada border days later.

On Wednesday, prosecutors began calling witnesses in the jury trial of the final defendant remaining in the case, 31-year-old Manuel Libore-Espinosa.

Libore-Espinosa faces charges of first-degree murder, shooting at a dwelling, aggravated battery with a firearm, attempted murder, and evading or resisting an officer. All stem from the June 18, 2001, spray of gunfire that killed 2-year-old Jailene and wounded her mother,, and her 13-year-old sister, Jazmine. …
