Man One of 61 to Be Ordained

Seldom do you hear someone with cancer say the experience "is a good thing."

Meet Frank L. Smith III. The Rio Rancho resident has undergone 10 operations for colon or bladder cancer since 1996 and is still trying to beat the disease.

"Cancer slowed me down," said Smith, 57. "It made me re-evaluate. I want to serve (God). (Cancer) gave me time to do this."

The "this" he refers to is being one of 61 candidates Archbishop Michael Sheehan will ordain as deacons of the Roman Catholic Church on Saturday. They are the largest diaconate class in the United States this year.

The candidates represent a variety of careers, including scientists, engineers, educators and retired military. …
