A more accurate accounting of the cost of living in New Mexico would double the number of families living in poverty here, a child advocacy group says.

New Mexico Voices for Children looked at the cost of living in 52 communities across the state.

Expenses the group examined include housing, child care, food, transportation and health care.

The survey, dubbed the "Bare Bones Budget," found the minimum cost for supporting a family was much higher than the federal poverty level.

Based on federal estimates, about 15 percent of families in New Mexico, or 140,670 families, live in poverty. …
