5-1 Vote Means Hearing To Be Set

The city ethics board agreed Tuesday to allow a complaint against City Councilor Greg Payne to go forward.

The Board of Ethics and Campaign Practices voted 5-1 in favor of setting a hearing on the merits of the complaint. A date wasn't announced.

The complaint, filed by Councilor Hess Yntema, alleges there might have been a conflict of interest when Payne recently sought a job from insurance companies that were competing for a city contract.

The decision by the ethics board appeared to be a reluctant one. The board discussed whether it should have a more stringent standard for allowing complaints to go forward. …
