TAOS PUEBLO -- Only American Indian firefighters have been assigned to battle the Encebado Fire where it burns across the Rio Pueblo watershed, an area sacred to Taos Pueblo.

Pueblo leaders and fire officials said Tuesday the fire is being fought with cultural concerns in mind.

The tribe has assigned advisers to accompany bulldozers working in some areas, said Mark Lujan, secretary for the pueblo governor. And the tribe has avoided using slurry, or air-dropped fire retardant, as well as bulldozers in many areas, he said.
