1 McKinley Guard Oversaw 80 Inmates

An investigation into the Fourth of July jailbreak at the McKinley County Adult Detention Center in Gallup has concluded that mistakes in all areas of security allowed two homicide suspects and two other inmates to escape.

Inadequate staffing -- one guard for about 80 prisoners -- because of the Independence Day holiday also led to a failure to take a head count, which gave the escaped inmates a three-hour head start, the investigation found.

Manuel Vasquez, previously charged with child abuse resulting in death, was arrested several hours after the break when he sought treatment for cuts and a fractured ankle at a Gallup hospital. …
