Long Court Battle Just Beginning

Lawyers for Santa Fe filed a motion Tuesday asking a state District Court judge to dismiss a court challenge to the city's "living wage" law.

The city's motion for summary judgment contends that the lawsuit filed earlier this year by business entities "is an unjustified effort to overcome the results of an extraordinary example of democracy at work."

Santa Fe's living wage ordinance safeguards "the public health, safety and welfare -- actions long recognized as a core responsibility of local government," the motion argues.

The City Council passed the controversial living wage law -- the only municipal minimum wage law in the country that extends broadly into the private sector -- in February. …
