Woman Officer Won Gender Case

State District Judge James Hall on Tuesday slashed the cash award -- from $285,000 to $90,250 -- for a woman police officer who earlier this year won a gender discrimination suit against the Santa Fe Police Department.

Hall, ruling after lawyers for both sides presented oral arguments, said the jury's award of the larger amount appeared to be improperly based on sympathy or an effort to punish the city.

Officer Deanna Nava won her gender discrimination suit in a March jury trial. She alleged that Sgt. Clarence Gallegos more closely monitored female officers and their work, publicly berated them and publicly questioned their judgment. …
