Teacher Pay Rises In Rankings.(Final)

New Mexico's average teacher pay has moved up two points in national rankings to No. 42, according to the American Federation of Teachers.

That's compared to rankings in the 1990s that hovered at the third- to fourth-lowest in the nation.

The newest figures, released Monday, are based on salaries from the 2001-2002 school year.

First-year teachers in New Mexico have the 31st highest pay in the nation, up from 36th in last year's report, federation spokeswoman Janet Bass said.

"Everybody has heard for years that we're at the bottom of the list for everything," said Christine Trujillo, president of the New Mexico Federation of Educational Employees. …
