City Opens Guarded Bosque.(Final)

Joggers and bicyclists can enjoy the bosque again, but they won't be doing it alone.

Mayor Martin Chavez announced Monday afternoon that the bosque's paved trails and levee roads are open to the public -- but under unprecedented, around-the-clock surveillance from 130 officers and volunteers.

"It's a tinder box," Chavez said during a news conference at City Hall. But "it's a bosque that runs through the city. If it's not going to be open, why have it?"

More than 330 acres of bosque -- the riparian forest flanking the Rio Grande -- burned in two separate fires late last month. The area has been closed since June 25. …
